Actos is the brand name for a medication manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals. Along with generic versions, it is prescribed to type 2 diabetes patients to reduce their sugar production and make better use of the insulin produced by their bodies. This helps prevent sugars from building up in the bloodstream.
But, people who take Actos also run the risk of potentially fatal side effects. Many lawsuits have been filed on behalf of type-2 diabetes patients who took Actos and later developed bladder cancer or serious heart problems. If you have taken Actos or any of its generic equivalents, Darryl Isaacs can evaluate if you have a claim against the manufacturer.
In 1999, Takeda Pharmaceuticals introduced Actos to the public, even though it was already known that the drug put patients at risk of bladder injuries. The FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) allowed Takeda to sell Actos on the condition that they conduct a 10-year study to investigate bladder cancer and other potential health risks.
After only five years, the FDA study showed that Actos patients had a notable increase in the likelihood of developing bladder cancer. According to the FDA, "Compared to never being exposed to Actos, a duration of Actos therapy longer than 12 months was associated with a 40% increase in risk."
Despite this alarming news, Actos continues to be sold and is very profitable for Takeda with sales of $4.1 billion between March 2010 and 2011. Many type 2 diabetes patients are not made aware of the risks posed by Actos. The most serious known side effects of Actos include:
